The Alaskans Retreat

Cooper Landing | AK

Located directly on peninsula on the Kenai River in Alaska, this private fishing retreat is designed to clearly evoke its location while paying homage to the world class fishing that lays just beyond the doorstep. The Architects' Studio crafted a vernacular design, rooted in it's place and locale, and influenced by the Scandanavian construction details preferred by the retreat's owners.

The project includes two houses, a separate caretaker's house, and two detached garages. The first floor of each house contains a vaulted great room anchored by a stone fireplace, a dining area, kitchen and master suite. Two additional bedrooms and two daybeds are nsstled into the volume of the upper roof.

To guard against Alaska's extended winters, the houses are extensively insulated and features a fully ventilated "cold roof" and comfortable in floor radiant heating. Given Alaska’s short construction period, the wall and roof structure, cut and assembled as a timberframe in the lower 48, was shipped to the site for quick erection.
